Looking To The Future With Everything We Do Today

We recognize that winemaking is a holistic endeavour, and see the interaction of land and community as a vital part of the winemaking process.

At Rombauer Vineyards we believe it’s an honor and responsibility to be good stewards of our vineyards as we strive to make the finest wines we can. We use sustainable practices whenever possible in the vineyards and at the winery to protect and preserve the land for future generations.

We've worked hard to ensure our operations are as enviromentally-friendly as possible

Napa Green Vineyard Certified

The new Napa Green Vineyard program is the first sustainable winegrowing certification to focus specifically on climate action, regenerative farming, and social equity, justice and inclusion.

Napa Green Winery Certified

Making an exceptional wine requires stewardship and attention to detail. The same is true of achieving Napa Green Winery Certification.

Fish Friendly Farming Certified

Fish Friendly Farming is a certification program for agricultural properties managed to restore fish and wildlife habitat and improve water quality.

Sustainable Stewardship

Solar Power

Solar power provides 60% of our energy at our Napa Valley facilities.

Nesting Boxes

Nesting boxes provide homes for barn owls that prey naturally on vineyard pests such as mice, rodents, and gophers.

Fish Friendly Farming

Our vineyards are Napa Green or certified Fish Friendly Farming, and our growing practices help protect endangered Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout.

Sheep

Grazing sheep in the vineyards act as natural weed eaters to reduce the use of herbicides sprayed under the vines. They also cut down on tractor passes needed for mowing which reduces emissions, labor, and compaction of the soil.

Water Efficiency

Leaders in water conservation, we use 2.4 gallons of water for each gallon of wine produced compared to the industry average of 6-14 gallons of water per gallon of wine. We installed the EcoVolt in 2017 to aid in waste water management and use drip irrigation to conserve water in our vineyards. They also cut down on tractor passes needed for mowing which reduces emissions, labor, and compaction of the soil.

Natural Fertilizer

Green waste generated from our vineyards and winery is composted and returned to the vineyards where it is used as a natural fertilizer, replenishing essential nutrients in our soils.

Sustainability is a full-time job. Take a look at the Rombauer team in action.

Although vines are self-pollinating, research shows that the best wines are made from soils teeming with life. Healthy bees lead to healthy and diverse cover crops.

We grow cover crops for a variety of reasons. Growing the plant material over winter and incorporating it back into the soil in the spring builds up the organic material in the soil. This is great for water penetration and retention, vitally important in drought years, and becomes a good natural source of nutrients.

Pruning sets the stage for the upcoming year, but it also impacts every year to come which is why it is so important to have experienced people pruning. It allows us to make any changes and also impacts when bud break, or the official kick off to the growing season, will start.

We harvest by hand primarily to preserve the quality of the fruit, but there is also a positive environmental impact as well. By not using machines, we minimize soil compaction which impacts water conservation and we also do not emit the carbon gasses associated with running that type of machine.

From stunning high-elevation sites to gently rolling foothills and flatlands, our vineyards represent the finest sites in Napa Valley and the Sierra Foothills.
